A History of Lee County

Lee County was formed on August 21, 1841, from Gadsden County. The counties of Polk County and Hillsborough County were formed in 1841 from the territory of Lee County. Gadsden County had formed in 1813. Gadsden County was later organized in 1820, and the county was named for Josiah Gadsden, a lawyer and statesman. Earlier to that, Gadsden County had formed in 1785.
