Guillermo Del Toro was never a writer. He was a filmmaker—and a great one. From subtle moments culled from our daily lives in HELLBOY to the Gothic horrors of PAN'S LABYRINTH, his work is as rich and spicy as it is complex. Del Toro also happens to be one of the most prolific directors in Hollywood and has a knack for producing critically acclaimed features. So, despite having his first three films hailed as masterpieces of modern cinema upon their U.S. release (DARK SHADOWS, PACIFIC RIM and BONE TOMAHAWK), it is only years later that THE HOWLING achieves critical acclaim. Now, THE HOWLING is finally released from its long black-boxed exile. In THE HOWLING, which promises to be his fourth film as director (after HEROES) and third action feature (after PACIFIC RIM and TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES II), Del Toro has created the most action-packed film since his seminal PACIFIC RIM. The instant action of THE HOWLING could be described as a collaboration between him and Paul WS Anderson; both seem to have settled on the idea quickly. And they did a good job as the film couldn't have been more different from their first collaboration. But, despite the differences THE HOWLING is not a Paul WS Anderson film. It is a well-made action film and someone who should watch this. THE HOWLING also contains a good amount of drama, which del Toro pulls off well. With good lines, some of which are classic, like: \"I've killed more men than you can possibly imagine\", this new film, which is set in 1970s Southern California, is a welcome homage to 1970s cult horror classics like RAISING CASTLE ROCK, LA BAYOU and DEVIL'S REJECTS. The cinematography and editing works well and the character animation and overall scope of the film is just grand because of it. At 115 minutes, THE HOWLING provides a good amount of action, which is its own reward. The interesting component is that the film starts slowly and picks up momentum once it enters the action scenes. The characters in THE HOWLING are interesting too. Aside from Machete's antagonistic and spiteful role, there is the well developed female character played by Vera Farmiga, who is so much more than a love interest. 7211a4ac4a
